Spread across 21,000 sqft in the heart of Mumbai, India, it is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including the most advanced full-colour offset printing technology and finishing and binding equipment. 1926

An Indian businessman, Mr. Rustam Vakil started Vakil & Sons
with two treadle machines in the business district of Ballard Estate in Mumbai, India.

 

1946

Vakil & Sons is incorporated as a private limited company.


1947

Vakil & Sons is a founding member of The Bombay Presidency Printers and Lithographers
Association.


1949

The Mehta family, the present owners, take a controlling interest in the company.


1957

Vakil & Sons receives their first ‘National Award for Excellence in Printing’ from the Vice
President of India, Dr S. Radhakrishnan (in the same line). Over the years, we have received the
highest number of National Awards for excellence in printing.

 

 

1962

Mr. G.U. Mehta, our Managing Director, is appointed President of the All-India Federation of Master
Printers.

An additional printing facility with modern offset presses is set up at Prabhadevi in central
Mumbai.


1963

Vakil & Sons is the first company in India to introduce greeting cards.


1965

Vakil & Sons installs the first modern prepress department in India.

Vakil & Sons acquires a 40% stake in Vakils, Feffer & Simons Pvt. Ltd., a joint
Indo-American venture, engaged in book publishing and distribution.


1967

Vakil & Sons partners with designer Mickey Patel to pioneer humorous ‘Frolic Cards’ in India.


1970

Vakil & Sons invests in a major expansion of the offset printing facility by introducing high
speed presses.


1980

Installed a sophisticated phototypesetter LINOTRON 202, first of its kind in India.

 

 

1981

Vakil & Sons receives an order for printing two Christmas cards from UNICEF. This is the first
time that UNICEF places an order with a company based in a developing country.


1982

Mr. Arun Mehta, our Managing Director, is appointed President of the All-India Federation of Master
Printers.

Vakil & Sons receives the book designing award from Leipzig International Book Design Company, a
first by an Indian company.


1985

Mr. Arun Mehta is appointed as Chairman of the Development Council for the Printing Industry,
Government of India.

Vakil & Sons receives an award for employing the highest number of people with disabilities in
the small and medium industry segment.


1986

Vakil & Sons prints the ‘History of the Congress’ in three volumes. A prestigious publication
for the Government of India, which is released by the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi.


1994

Vakil & Sons is appointed as the Indian affiliate of Bowne & Co. Inc., the world’s largest
financial printer.


1998

Premedia pre-press services launched for the global market.

 

 

2001

Vakiks co-founds Softype, Inc., a company incorporated in Palo Alto, USA, to focus on document
management services.


2004

Vakils Premedia is incorporated to offer premedia and IT enabled services.


2006

Kahani Tree (a division of Vakils Feffer & Simons) focusing on promoting reading amongst
children is launched.


2008

Modernization of the printing facilities. Installation of state-of-the-art five-colour offset press
from Japan.


2010

Vakils Premedia launches pharmaceutical artwork services through its partnership with Janssen
Pharmaceuticals.


2011

JVX Media Services is incorporated to offer XBRL Services.


2013

Vakils Premedia launches IT and App development services.


2015

Kahani Tree opens a children’s book store at our Prabhadevi Office.


2016

Bimal Mehta, our Managing Director, is presented with the ‘Trendsetter of the Printing Industry’
award by the Mumbai Mudrak Sangh during their Printers’ Day celebration.


2018

Perivan India, a joint venture between Perivan Ltd. and Vakils Premedia, is incorporated, for
developing and marketing digital board portals.


2020

Perivan India is acquired by Diligent BoardBooks, USA.
Vakils Premedia is presented with IQVIA Technologies’ ‘2020 Marketing Agency Partner of the Year’ award for outstanding contributions to our clients’ success.


2021

Vakils Premedia is renamed to Vakils to mark our continuous expansion of offerings and services.

VAKILS, FEFFER & SIMONS (VFS)

Founded in 1960, Vakils, Fetter & Simons Pvt. Ltd. (VFS) specializes in publishing non-fiction books that are distributed nationally, and also in the markets in the United Kingdom and the United States. Several of our books have been national bestsellers, and some titles have over 28 editions. Some of our best-selling titles include – The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking by Tarla Dalal, Dr. R. K. Anand’s Guide to Child Care and Hinduism – An Introduction by Shakunthala Jagannathan.

In collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Press, VFS has also published many educational books on Indian history and art. ‘Kishangarh Paintings’ has won the Best Art Book award at an international book exhibition in Leipzig.

 

KAHANI TREE (A DIVISION OF VFS)

Kahani Tree is an independent children’s bookstore in Mumbai. It offers a curated selection of unusual books for children by independent publishers from all over India. Kahani Tree also has a range of delightful bilingual books and books in regional languages. Besides an unusual collection of books, Kahani Tree also organises story-telling sessions and author interactions in schools and bookstores and helps to set up libraries and reading rooms.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Vakils has always been a socially responsible organization. Walk into our reception area, and you will be greeted by a visually impaired telephone operator. Over the years, we have given employment to several disabled persons in our pre-press departments.

Over the years, we have been involved with several non-profit organizations.

VCARE

Vakils supports VCARE on a continuous basis. Every Vakils greeting card carries the message of VCARE. Part proceeds of the sale of greeting cards is donated to the corpus annually which is used for providing support to under privileged cancer patients.

VCARE Foundation was founded in 1994. VCARE fights cancer on multiple fronts, offering a wide range of programs and services that are free of charge and available in communities through hospital and centres.

VCARE reaches more than 4000 patients annually.

Rotary Club of Bombay’s Night Study Centre

The Night Study Centre (NSC), set up by the Rotary Club of Bombay, provides students with a secure and quiet environment to study. At the centres, students are provided with an evening snack and a tutor. Apart from the NSC classes, get-together programs allow students to interact with each other, offering them the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills.

Girivanavasi Educational Trust (GVET)

The Nareshwadi Learning Centre, an initiative of GVET, comprises of a government recognised school, hostels for girls and boys, a government approved children’s shelter home for 100 children, a school farm and nursery, a school health centre and a vocational training centre. The education and lodging are provided free of cost.

Ajit Despande Medical Centre

The Ajit Despande Medical Center (ADMC) provides primary healthcare services to a large rural population around Talwada, Maharashtra. This includes general medicine, pathology, pulmonary, dental and paediatric care. Since its inception, over 200,000 patients have benefited from the ADMC.

Somaiya Medical Trust

Somaiya Medical Trust is a charitable multi-speciality hospital in Mumbai, which provides medical treatment to the underprivileged. Our support helps the hospital with the treatment of their patients.

Water Resources – Jal Jeevan

Jal Jeevan aims to provide safe drinking water in urban slums, villages and lowincome schools. Jal Jeevan has provided clean drinking water in 50 villages in rural Maharashtra and 20 municipal schools in Mumbai.

Help a Child

The ‘Help A Child’ initiative provides academic scholarships for further education to students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Free Braille Paper

Vakils provides free Braille paper to various visually impaired students in the city of Mumbai.
